some thoughts on decorating

A good friend is moving and requested that I do a post on paint colors. As a designer, the most difficult thing for me is looking at a blank screen. I need inspiration, visuals and/or a concept in order to produce anything viable...and the same goes for decorating. Here are a couple of my favorite sources for home decor inspiration:
Magazines: Sadly, Domino is no longer. However, there is a dedicated Flickr pool with over 500 images, as well as a number of stories and slide shows on the Brides website. Elle Decor, Dwell and House Beautiful are also good (and still in print!).
Blogs: There are way too many amazing decorating blogs to mention, but some of my favorites include Little Green Notebook, sneak peeks at Design*Sponge, Remodelista, and the ridiculously resourceful Apartment Therapy
Online magazines: It seems like there is a new online magazine every week. My current favorites are Lonny and Rue.

My number one recommendation with decorating is to take your time. Hopefully, you'll be living in your space for at least a little bit, so pick items, colors and pieces that you love....and have fun!

ugh

Is anyone having trouble with Blogger today? All my photos are uploading in a warped House of Mirrors sort of way. Hopefully, it will be fixed soon!

weardrobe 100

Recently, I have found myself obsessed with street style blogs (perhaps its because I wear yoga pants most days). Weardrobe 100 is a collection of editors favorite looks from the past year, and here are some of my favorites.

The proprietress of The Uniform Project pledges to wear the same dress for one year (she does have seven of them) in order to raise money for uniforms for schoolchildren in India. Her exercise in sustainable fashion is documented daily.

op shop

Sometime last summer I decided to stop buying new things, or things made new. The idea was to cut down on the amount of stuff in the world, and therefore not encourage, support or contribute to the creation of disposable merchandise (think Ikea furniture, Forever 21, new cell phones every few months). If I want something, I try to find it used or vintage, and most of the time, I find that I didn't really need it in the first place. It's surprisingly easy (well, for someone who likes thrift stores and flea markets anyway) and I'm not a hundred percent strict about it (underwear, yarn and gifts seem to be my major weeknesses).

Through Lobster and Swan, I found KatieCrackernuts, an Australian journalist who has taken a pledge to only wear secondhand clothing for two weeks to possibly win a new Prius. Although I wish the time frame was a little more substantial, I totally get behind the idea of op shopping, as she calls it. Here in the bay area, there are some fantastic thrift, vintage, used and consignment stores where you have a bevy of great options that fit the bill of op shopping. Besides, the flea is this weekend!

some days are better than others...

...like today, when I arrived home to find this red dress hanging in the living room. Apparently, it was gathering dust in Tracey's closet and she thought I might like it. What a great excuse to start photographing my outfits, like so many of the blogs I enjoy looking at.

Thanks Tracey - I love it!

sfgirlbybay @ the curiosity shoppe

I was left rather underwhelmed from the opening reception for the sfgirlbybay show at The Curiosity Shoppe. I've enjoyed Victoria's Sunday in the City series on her blog, but the images didn't translate as well in a gallery setting. It's possible that the tiny gallery space is hard to show in, but the images weren't very compelling in person. My favorite part of the exhibit was the collection of vintage cameras in the front windows.

we make words

we make words is literally just that - a blog about words created from other objects. It's pretty sweet.
