from the flea: santa monica airport

I've nearly completed the superfecta of Los Angeles flea markets (Long Beach is the last on my list) after visiting the Santa Monica airport flea market this past weekend. In general, I thought it was too small and fairly expensive (note that I am also incredibly cheap), but they did have some nice things.
I didn't end up getting anything (holding out for the Rose Bowl in a few weeks), but my mom got these cute plates:

california science center

I was underwhelmed by the California Science Center - perhaps it would have been more interesting if I was or had a child....I also unfairly judged it against the spectacular Academy of Science in San Francisco. Nevertheless, it's always interesting to see a new place and I did like the Aerial sculpture.

velaslavasay panorama/union theater

Inspired by Hannah's trip to LA, we visited the Velaslavasay Panorama at the Union Theater. Part art installation, part theater and part overgrown garden, its a interesting Los Angeles landmark. It's a little hard to describe, but I love discovering new neighborhoods and places so I found the experience fascinating. For more information on the space, please click here.

portraiture

Jeff brought this portrait home recently, drawn for him by a young patron at work. The resemblance is uncanny:

duck crossing

While walking though my neighborhood yesterday, I noticed a family of ducks crossing the street. The mother looked both ways, then crossed. I followed them across to make sure no cars came their way, completely mesmerized.

hollyhock house

The Hollyhock House was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright for heiress Aline Barnsdall in 1921. She disliked the house, and soon donated it along with the surrounded lands (now refereed to as Barnsdall Park) to the city of Los Angeles in 1927.
The name Hollyhock House was given to the structure due to the stylized representation of the Hollyhock flower that Wright used as decoration along the outside.
You aren't allowed to take photos inside the house, but I assure that it's definitely worth a visit!

water

Water, Our Thirsty World is the current exhibit on display at the Annenberg Space for Photography, a museum devoted entirely to photography that opened about a year ago in Century City. The museum is free and I found the exhibit very moving. The  exhibit was produced in conjunction with National Geographic, so if you're not able to visit the exhibit in person (on view through June 13th), please check out the current issue.

buttoned up cowl

I haven't posted about knitting projects in awhile, but never fear, I'm still purling away. I just finished this cowl for the second time (the first iteration got ripped out, as it looked terrible). I added buttons to it - otherwise it would have been hard to get on over my enormous head. I think it came out pretty cute - too bad its supposed to be 80 degrees today!
I'm especially pleased with the buttons, purchased at The Button Store.
Ravelry: Burburry inspired cowl, or here.

a garden tour!

I have a black thumb, killing innocent plants before they even knew what hit them. It's clearly not genetic, since my mother has cultivated a supremely beautiful garden. Take a gander!
