Much like visiting Coney Island, going to Flushing Meadows was one of my long time New York dreams (please note this is different from Flushing). Jeff appeased me this weekend by taking our bikes out to Queens to visit the site of two World's Fairs. There's been a lot written about Flushing Meadows (this is the post that sold me), so I won't get into the history and details. I will say that it was one hundred percent worth the schlep - totally fascinating!

breezy point
After visiting both Fort Tilden and the Rockaways last summer, I knew I wanted to explore more of the Rockaway Peninsula. We took our bikes to the end of the A line and then rode out to Breezy Point, a cute beach community at the western edge.

lazy sunday (on a wednesday)
Last Sunday, Jeff and I dusted off our bikes...
...kicked off our shoes...
...and spent a rather relaxing day on Governors Island.

sandy hook
On a recent recommendation, we took the ferry to Sandy Hook and I couldn't be more pleased with the suggestion (thanks James!). The day started with a soft shell crab sandwich at Moby's in Highlands.
After lunch, we rode our bikes to Sandy Hook, a national park located at the north end of the real Jersey Shore.
There was a great bike path that led all through the park, part of which contained the old military buildings of Fort Hancock.
At one point we happened upon the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, the oldest operating lighthouse in America, and took a tour that lead us up 95 steps to the top.
Good times!

a return to governors island
Since we had such a good time last on our last visit, Jeff and I took another trip to Governors Island.
The island closes on the 25th - if you live in New York and haven't gone yet, it's really great.

what to do on governors island
Our third attempt to go to Governors Island proved to be a success (yay!) and it turned out to be such a lovely adventure, a list of suggested activities seemed in order:
1. Ride your bike and look at all the old military buildings.
2. Beat your husband at mini-golf.
3. Eat a smoked pork sandwich while looking at the Statue of Liberty.
4. Call your mom in Dallas, bragging that you just ate a smoked pork sandwich while looking at the Statue of Liberty. Do this while laying in a hammock.
5. Notice there is a vending machine that serves hot kosher onion rings. Be sure to note said machine is called "Hot Nosh".
6. Visit the Governors house. Wear a sun hat.

birth-date, day 1
Instead of a birthday present this year, I asked Jeff for a birth-date, and I was not disappointed! He planned a two day adventure, covering both outdoor and cultural activities. Day one included a looooong bike ride to Fort Tilden and Jacob Riis Park, where we enjoyed sandwiches and rose.
